Valinculos used to be a tourist haven and a major attraction for movie stars and celebrities before the country's independence from Portugal and the civil war between 1975 and 1992. During the time of communist rule, the infrastructure of the country mostly collapsed and remote destination like Valiculos vanished from the normal tourist destinations. With the new multi-party government, the country is fairly stable and tourism is playing a vital role in rebuilding the country. Valinculos has become a very laid-back, difficult to get to place. Going there by road is a 4 day journey from the nearest airport, the safest ones being in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is possible to get there via sm all private planes and yachts. The beaches at Valinculos are spectacular : very clean sand and crystal clear water. The climate is sub tropical and the ambient temperature of the seawater makes it great for diving and swimming. There is much marine life to experience via snorkel diving.
