Finding a great mechanic is as important, if not more so, as finding a great hairstylist, a fantastic gardener or a trustworthy cleaning lady. However, it's not always simple. The first thing you want to consider is qualifications. Mechanics, like other technical people, should have taken courses in repairing and maintaining vehicles. Ask to see your mechanic's credentials. Another aspect worth considering is experience. While you don't need a mechanic who has been in business for thirty years necessarily, you also don't want one who has only just qualified. Then there's cost. Of course, price is not everything, but you do want to find someone who charges fair prices for fair labor, and who has a reputation for honesty. Some unscrupulous mechanics are kn own to take advantage of people's lack of knowledge, so it's worth asking friends and family for referrals too.
