Secrets of Caraway Seed

The caraway seed is considered a spice, but it is actually the fruit of a plant in the parsley family. This little five ridged seed is grown extensively in Holland, Canada and the United States, and it is one of the more popular spices in the world. This is a sweet and tangy spice, and is used in rye bread around the world, so chances are you have already tasted it, even if you do not know you have. Another common use for caraway seed is to flavor sauerkraut, although, being one of the oldest spices in Europe, known and used since the middle ages, it's found its way into many other recipes. Use the seeds whole, to add interest and decoration, or grind them alone or with other spices, and use them in sweet or savory dishes.
