How to Choose a New Pet from a Pet Shop

For some people, choosing a pet is a matter of research, visiting breeders, planning and thought. However, for many of us, especially those with kids, it's more of a spur of the moment decision. Choosing a pet from a pet shop, whether it's a gerbil, a puppy or a parrot, does have a few basic guidelines. First of all, you want to make sure that the animal is physically healthy. Look for clear bright eyes, an alert nature, and no signs of skin disease. In the case of puppies and kittens, check their gums and tongues too – very pale mucous membranes can indicate disease. Then ensure that you find out more about the animal you are buying – what they eat, what needs they have, and decide whether yo u can afford to maintain them – in terms of money and time!
