Over the last decade, the small West Coast fishing village of Paternoster has steadily grown into a major tourist destination. The town itself is still small, with a tightly controlled group of businesses and restaurants operating in it. The growth is due to the development of beach front holiday houses and guest houses. The town used to be a Missionary outpost and a fishing village. It is surrounded by farms and small holdings and the vast Atlantic ocean. Its landmarks include the Paternoster Hotel, Die Voorstrand Restaurant, the Oyster Farm and a heritage site that has the remains of stone age settlements. The weather is mostly hot and windy in summer, with some calm days. Winter is pleasantly warm in the daytime, with chilly nights. March to June has some of the nicest days for walking on the beach and going on hiking trails. Wild flowers are plentiful along the trails. There is plenty of accomodation, almost all of it rated as 3 to 4 Star. There is a small township of fisherman on one side of the town and the hotels and guest houses surround it.
