The Secrets of Wedding Traditions

Although wedding rules vary from culture to culture, there are some very surprising similarities among all the wedding traditions. In some way or another, traditional weddings in all cultures support the institution of marriage by prescribing the proper conduct for the couple as regards their future relationship. For instance, some of the rules mark the transition to adulthood, or symbolically refer to the couple's future roles as child bearers. All these traditions have persisted over very long periods of time, and many have even survived, intact, and attest to the endurance of marriage as a social institution, as well as the profound, symbolic meaning attached to it.
