If you are a new mom, and you are struggling to get your new baby off to sleep, then swaddling may be just the way to get your little one off to dream land. The reason for this is attributed to the sensation of being warm and snug, similar to what they are used to, having spent nine months or so warm and safe in your womb. Swaddling also helps to prevent what is known as the startle reflex. This is when infants, up to around six months old, have a sensation of falling, as they are falling asleep, which leads to them waking up repeatedly. To swaddle your child, place his or her arms alongside their body, on top of a baby blanket. Make sure that the top of the blanket is in line with their neck. Fold each of the top corners down, towards the body, creating a slanted edge to the top of the blanket. Bring one side over, and tuck under your baby's arm, and then do the same with the other.
