For those of us who like to 'rough it' when getting away on holiday for a weekend, hiking and camping are great options. In the more remote areas with hikers' camping sites, you very often end up contending with the dreaded 'long drop' toilet. These toilets are basically just deep holes in the ground with toilet bowls built on top. If the site has no caretaker, you will need to sanitize it best you can before using it. The first thing to do is get ash from a leftover campfire and put a few shovels worth down the hole. This helps get rid of most of the stench. The next step is to crumple up newspaper, set it alight and drop that into the hole. This will get rid of gas and flies and mos t other unwanted insects. Wet some paper towels or newspaper and clean the seat and surrounding area. Check for spiders and scorpions lurking in the enclosure.
