If you are the parent of a young child, chances are, at some time, your child will suffer from a viral disease known as HFMD, or Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease. Do not worry though – it is not related to the better known Foot and Mouth Disease that livestock suffer from! What it is, is a viral infection, usually caused by the Cocksackie virus, that presents as a rash on the hands and feet, and blisters in the mouth. Since HFMD is viral, there is not much that can be done, aside from wait it out, ensure that your child is getting enough fluids, monitor his or her fever, and try to keep him or her comfortable and happy. Luckily, the rash and blisters will only last three to five days, but you will probably notice that your child is fussy and feverish a few days b efore that too.
