Are Celebrity Adoptions As Bad As the News Would Have Us Believe?

When Sandra Bullock recently adopted a three month old boy, in the midst of a personal scandal that is all set to end her marriage, the world once again focused on the negative aspects of the move. The same thing happened when Madonna adopted David Banda from Malawi, and when Meg Ryan brought her daughter home from China. Some argue that they are simply buying affection, and that they have more money than they know what to do with. This is, of course, entirely possible – no one can argue that when it comes to eccentricities, Hollywood stars top the list. However, there are other considerations too. For instance, what life would those children have had otherwise? Would they have spent their formative years in an orphanage? Would they have starved, or been exposed to violence?
