How to Store Your Car for Long Term

Long term storage is anything over a month. These tips will help ensure that your car is on good working order when you return. Try to keep your car indoors, out of the weather. Wash the car before putting it away and check all the fluid levels. Try to use up any 'old' gas and then fill it up with new fuel just before storage. This prevents rust in the tank and pipes. Disconnect and remove your battery. Modern batteries need to be trickle charged once a week. If you are planning on storing your car for longer than a year, sell your battery and bring a new one with when you return, since it probably won't be chargeable. To prevent flat bald spots on non-radial tires, jack the car up and put blocks or stands on the outermost points of the suspension. This prevents spring and shock absorber damage. Store the wheels off the ground and away from heat and electric motors. Leave the windows slightly open to allow circulation and use moisture and odor absorbent products inside the car.
