How to Replace a Broken Window Pane

It happens to everyone at some stage – your kids throw a ball through a window, or you have a break in, or you clumsily send something shooting through your own window. Unless it's a very big, or difficult to reach window, which is better suited to replacement by professionals, it is actually quite quick and easy to replace most window panes. The first thing you will want to do is buy a new pane of glass. Usually, these are a little larger than the part of the window that is visible – since there is beading or putty there that keeps the pane in place. Once you have the size of the glass measured, visit your local glass supplier and have them cut the pane to size for you. Depending on what type of window frame you have, you will also need something to hold the glass in place. Wooden beading can usually be reused, but if you have steel frames, you will need to chip the old putty away, and replace it with new. Once the pane is fitted, leave the putty to dry for a day or two, and then paint to match your windows.
