How to know if your Child has Croup

Croup is caused by a virus, and is a form of laryngitis, that can occur from three months to three years. Croup can, however, be caused by other viruses too. With croup, breathing is difficult, as the airways are narrowed. Noisy breathing, especially when inhaling, and a harsh, barking cough, are symptoms of croup. Another symptom is hoarseness, which is sometimes worse in the morning, and, in severe cases, rapid breathing and turning blue from lack of oxygen. Croup responds well to antibiotics, as it is bacterial. The incubation period of croup is just a few days, and, because of the different viruses, it is possible to have it several times, and some children are prone to croup. Children with croup are often distressed, so keep calm yourself, and reassure him. For a mild attack of croup, treat any fever, if necessary, and give plenty of liquids. Sitting your child in a steamy bathroom will help to decongest his airways.
